Where Mission is a Way of Life
Second Starts addresses the household start-up needs of families in housing crisis in the Indianapolis area. They accomplish this by accepting new and gently-used household items. Second Starts sorts and organizes the donations at their facility located on the grounds of Carmel United Methodist Church. When a housing assistance agency informs them that a client is moving into a home, they pull the necessary items from storage and deliver them to their new owner. Most orders include kitchen items, dishes, towels, bed linens, and other household items. Second Starts has been delivering to about 100 families each month. They provide these items free of charge so the recipient can use their limited funds for groceries, rent, and other necessities. Their goal is to help create long term residence stability. Go to their website, www.secondstarts.org, to learn more and to find a complete list of needed items.
Typically, they receive enough used housewares to complete 75% of a family’s request. It takes about $25/family to complete the request. They use cash donations to buy a lamp, skillet or coffee maker, or to purchase the gas to deliver the items. You may take your donations to Second Starts, bring them to St. Mark’s, or Second Starts will pick up from your home.
